"The New York Times reported that “According to a recent survey, 81 percent of people feel that they have a book in them…and should write it.” If you do the math, that represents over 200 million people in the U.S. who want to write a book in their lifetime! No wonder self-publishing is thriving as never before!" from selfpublishingresources.com.
It almost never fails. When I tell people I'm writing a book (or two or three) I hear "Oh, I have an idea for a book I want to write someday."
Like it's a new recipe to try or a new dress shop to try out.
The think is....I never used to say that. I never had "an idea" for a book. Not for a long, long time. Then when I did have an idea....I didn't even voice it to anyone. I think I thought it was somehow a sacred thing...a wish like the ones you wish as you blow out your birthday cake candles.
I still don't talk about it much to anyone I meet. I'm not sure why. Maybe insecurity or fear of "the look". Of course it would be different if I were published....wouldn't it?
What about you writers out there? Do you talk up your book ideas or share with many that you are writing?

I don't talk about my writing with anyone I actually know in real life, lol. And even on the internet I don't really discuss my WIPs unless I've posted something and am asking for feedback. :)
ReplyDeleteJasmine,
ReplyDeleteI find that most people aren't interested anyway. I think the life of a writer is a mystery to most.
Hi, Jan! It's great to meet you! Thank for becoming a follower on my blog!
ReplyDeleteTo answer your post question, I do not share my manuscript ideas with others. I have heard too many horror stories of people "taking" each other's ideas - you know, like giving out the baby's name while you're still pregnant and finding out someone else used it first.
Like you, I don't speak much about my writing to others outside of family who ask about it, even though I have been published in magazines. It's mainly because I don't want to brag or make it sound like I'm better than them just because I have my work in print. You know?
Thanks again for your support!
thanks Lauren, good to hear from you. I know how you feel about sharing too much. You never know!

Hi Jan -
ReplyDeleteI've met lots of folks who want to write a book...or want me to write it for them. I give the ones who want to write a list of resources. I suggest authors who write for hire to the others.
I'm open about writing books/devotionals/articles. God gave me the ability, and I do it for His glory.
Blessings,
Susan :)
